Choosing your perfect Wood floor?

There are almost limitless options with wood flooring. As with many of our clients who don’t buy flooring every day, it can be confusing. Choosing your perfect Wood floor? Our advice is always to think along two lines; Design and Quality.

Flooring options to choose

Design

Broadly, there are three design aspects to a wood floor: Shape, Colour and Texture.

With shape, wood flooring generally comes in a Plank, Herringbone, or Chevron. Planks come in almost any width, from 90mm up to 300mm, Chevron and Herringbone in small, medium or large sizes. Our clients will typically start by looking to social media, magazines or Pinterest for inspiration and end up with choosing a straight plank floor. This is because as amazing as patterned floors to look at, they are more expensive.

With colour, darker floors make a space feel cosier whilst lighter floors more spacious and airy. Mid-tone floors, such as yellows are more versatile and work in any space. These floors tend to work best if you don’t have a specific design style in mind. Our advice is to always look for a general colour, not a specific one as wood flooring is a natural product so you will always get colour variations across the planks. The “grade” of wood is also important and a character grade will have more knots and look more rustic, whilst a cleaner grade will have no knot and look more modern.

With texture, floors can be heavily brushed or distressed to give them a reclaimed feel. They can also be light brushed or smooth. A good quality distressed floor will transform a room, but will always be more expensive because there are more treatments on the wood with knots needing to be filled.

What about Thickness? Thickness is something that many of our clients often ask about as it is normal to ascribe more value to thicker floors. However, the majority of wood floors are cosmetic floors that sit on top of a subfloor. Thickness therefore doesn’t matter.

Quality

A well-made wood floor with high-quality oils will last generations and perform well in a busy family environment. A poorly made floor simply won’t.

Weknowflooring source only well-made wood floors from reputable manufacturers. We also apply the best oils from leading manufacturers like Ciranova on the floors we install.

Nowadays, everyone can purchase cheaper floors that are typically sold online. But they often find problems with oil quality, delamination (when the oak top layers came away from the ply core), split grains and also lippage (when there were noticeable differences in heights between the planks).

We only work with brands that professional floor fitters work with. Wood floors are not for everyone, especially those on a budget.
